By day out — what kind of trip is this?
The American sights people build a whole trip around.
A canyon rim, a harbour statue, a prison island, a memorial in a harbour that still holds the ship. Six places that decide the shape of an itinerary, and the best way to see each one.
New York fills up first, so book New York first.
Harbour sailings at golden hour, the observation decks after dark, the food walk through Greenwich Village, the memorial that needs a timed ticket. The city that sells the most tours in the country also sells them the furthest ahead.
What America actually books.
Every review →Not a wish list. These are the tours travellers pick most often across the country, in order, with what each costs and what you get for the day.

What a good day out costs in the States.
Every priced tour on the site, split three ways. Plenty of the best American days sit in the cheapest column.
Walking tours, ghost walks, ferry rides, museum and deck tickets. Two hours that make a city make sense.
The standard American day out: harbour cruises, food walks, airboats, small-group park trips with lunch.
New Orleans saves its best hours for after dinner.
The French Quarter is a walking city and it walks late. Cemetery and voodoo history, a courtyard-by-courtyard drinking tour, a steamboat with a jazz band on the top deck, and an early start out to the swamp before the heat lands.
- 1New Orleans Premier Ghost, Voodoo and Vampire Walking Tourfrom $27
- 2New Orleans Steamboat Natchez Jazz Cruise with Dinner Optionfrom $58
- 3Adults-Only New Orleans Ghost, Crime, Voodoo, and Vampire Tourfrom $37
On Oahu and Maui the day starts in the water.
Snorkel bays that only settle in the morning, catamarans off Waikiki, the road to Hana with someone else driving, and Pearl Harbor, which asks for a quiet half day of its own. Book the water for early and leave the afternoon loose.
- 1Oahu Grand Circle Island and Haleiwa Tour: 9-Hr Deluxe Experiencefrom $140
- 2Grand Tour Around Island 16 Locations plus Snorkelingfrom $109
- 3Parasailing Experience in Waikiki, HIfrom $44
Three days out you can only really have in America.
Harbour cruises and food walks exist everywhere. A flat-bottomed boat over sawgrass, a lantern-lit walk through a witch-trial town, and an imu pit opened at sunset do not.

The Everglades Airboat
The Everglades is a river fifty miles wide and a few inches deep, and a flat-bottomed boat with an aircraft propeller on the back is the only sensible way across it. Trips run from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Tamiami Trail, most of them an hour on the water plus a wildlife show. Go early: alligators sit out in the morning sun and the afternoon storms are on a timetable of their own.

The American Ghost Walk
Four old cities do this better than anywhere: Salem, where the 1692 trials still set the tone; New Orleans, where cemetery and voodoo history are the same story; Savannah and Charleston, where the squares and alleys do half the work. Most run after dark, most last two hours, and the good guides are historians who happen to work at night.

The Luau
A luau is a feast built around an imu, an underground oven where a whole pig cooks under banana leaves and hot stones all afternoon. The best ones are on the water at sunset and treat the hula as history rather than a floor show. Dinner is included, drinks usually are, and seating is by ticket tier, so the price gap is a view.

Las Vegas books more canyon mornings than casino nights.
All the days out from Vegas →Look at what people actually reserve here and the Strip barely shows up. The Grand Canyon west rim is a four-hour drive or a short flight, Hoover Dam is on the way, Red Rock and the Mojave start twenty minutes from the last hotel, and the desert is a morning job before the heat.

The American tickets that will not wait for your landing.
Most of the country can be booked from the hotel the night before. These four cannot. They run on ferry capacity, tribal permits and release dates that have nothing to do with your flight.
- 01Alcatraz Ticket, Ferry, & Self-Guided AppOne ferry serves the island and nothing else lands there. Summer sailings go weeks ahead, and tickets are released on a rolling window.
- 02Page: Lower Antelope Canyon Entry and Navajo Guided TourThe canyon sits on Navajo Nation land and can only be entered with an authorised Navajo guide. Midday light slots are the first to go.
- 03Salute to Pearl Harbor Including USS ArizonaThe USS Arizona Memorial programme runs on timed reservations. A small batch opens the day before, and it is gone in minutes.
- 04Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island with FerryCrown and pedestal access is capped every day and sells out months out. Ferry-only tickets are easier, but they are a different visit.
America is best seen from a boat, and it knows it.
Every American city worth visiting has a waterfront and sells a way onto it: harbour sailings in Boston and San Diego, an architecture cruise up the Chicago River, a paddle-wheeler out of New Orleans, whales off Cape Cod and Maui, manatees in a Crystal River spring. This is the biggest single group of tours on the site.
